WHERE DID OUR NAME COME FROM?
Harriet & Joseph Berger (pictured) are the founders of HarJoe Money Center.
A SMALL-FAMILY BUSINESS SINCE 1964…HarJoe Money Center is an innovative financial services provider offering exceptional and friendly customer service to its loyal customers and community for over 50 years.
1927
The business, started by Joseph Berger, was an immigrant from Tarnow, Poland who came to this country at the age of six in 1927. Joseph’s father left his family in Poland in 1921 to seek out the American Dream. Six years later when he had enough money, he sent for his family and they settled in Brooklyn, NY.
1948
Also known as J.B. or Joe, he went to Boys High in Brooklyn. He could not afford college so he helped out in the family bakery and various other jobs until the Air Force called during World War II. Once the War was over, he returned to New York and became a salesman. Two years later, he met his wife to be, Harriet and they married in 1948.
1964
In 1964, the check cashing industry was in its infancy and Joe asked a friend for small loan so he could start a check cashing store in East NY, Brooklyn. Within three months, Joe was able to pay back his friend and was on his way to building a successful business that met the financial needs of the community.
1967
In1967, Joe opened a second store in Jamaica, Queens.
1980
In 1980, Joe’s son Andrew came into the business. Andrew, also known as A.B. or Andy, graduated from Ohio University with a B.S. in Business Administration and a M.A. in Physical Education. Instead of pursuing a career in education, Andrew decided to go into the family business and eventually took full responsibility of running the business.
1986
In 1986, HarJoe expanded and bought a third store on Pitkin Avenue in Brooklyn.
TODAY
Andy has served for many years on the board of the FSCNY, a professional trade organization representing licensed check cashers. Since the inception of the Check Cashiers Association over 70 years ago, the financial services industry (CHECK CASHIERS) have fulfilled its mission to ensure that millions of low to moderate income New Yorkers in the most underserved and under-banked neighborhoods have access to affordable, secure and quality financial services in a convenient and regulated environment.
The check cashing community has evolved into more than a check cashing business and HarJoe Money Center continues to offer a full line of financial services and products to its customers.

Autism is a developmental disorder that significantly impacts the quality of life for children and their families. T Off 4 Autism is 100% volunteer driven focused on raising awareness and supporting a variety of organizations and charities to help individuals with Autism and their families.
Our goal is to fund research to find a cure and provide long term assistance including housing accommodations for those affected to enhance their opportunities to achieve full potential.
What is Autism?
Autism is a complex developmental disability that typically appears during the first 3 years of life and is the result of a neurological disorder that affects the normal functioning of the brain.
Autism now affects one out of every 68 children (one in 42 boys). Autism is the fastest growing serious developmental disability in the United States.
